InMotion Hosting is an employee owned and operating company that has been in the business of providing web hosting services ever since 2001. Since then, they have grown to become one of the bigger hosts in the industry.
Today, InMotion Hosting offers shared web hosting, VPS hosting, and dedicated server hosting. this goes to show that they worked hard to provide a plethora of webhosting options for those who actually go with them for their hosting needs.
Want to see what else they have to offer if you sign up with them? Just continue reading this review and you’re sure to discover everything that you need to know.
Price Value
Starting at $3.00 per month for their shared hosting, the prices with these folks are actually pretty decent when you compare them with the other hosts in the industry. Of course, if you want a plan that’s good enough for your business, you’ll have to pay a few bucks extra each month.
When it comes to the value that they provide consumers with, it’s pretty decent, but it’s not the best deal I have seen during my years of reviewing some of the top web hosting providers in the industry.
Features
For this review, I’m going to take a look at the features that come with their cheapest plan (the personal shared web hosting one for those of you who are curious). the main reason for this is that I have a feeling that InMotion Hosting is going to flunk out in this section.
After all, I absolutely hate hosts who limit common features that are usually included in cheap web hosting plans.
- Spam Prevention is only available on the more Expensive Plans
- 100 GB Disk Space
- 1 TB of Data Transfer Each Month
- Web Site Builder is only available on the more Expensive Plans
- Domains only Supported on the more Expensive Plans
- MySQL only Supported on the more Expensive Plans
- 30 Day Money back Guarantee
- And the list goes on…
Now, if you ask me, I know for a fact a lot of the things that they limit to the more expensive plans don’t set them back any money. this is a sales tactic that has been used in the industry for years just to sell their prospective customers a higher price plan. this is one thing that I absolutely hate!
Why do I hate it so much? well, this industry has actually come a long ways since the beginning days and the best hosts simply don’t try to fool people into paying a higher price for something that should come with all web hosting plans in the first place. It’s a scandalous move on InMotion’s part, and any other hosts who still try to run the same game on people. I’m just glad that you ended up here, so that you can see this host for who they really are.
I’m so upset over this tactic, I’m going to go ahead and ask them why in the world they do it, so that I can show you guys what they think about it, in their own words. Here it is folks!
Matt B.: Hello Zach. how may I help you?
Zach: Hello Matt, I was looking at your personal web hosting plan for $3 per month and was curious about something.
Zach: why are the most basic features like MySQL for example not supported when they are supported on the most expensive plans?
Matt B.: the Starter package does not have the ability to have a MySQL database.
Matt B.: We do not include it in that package.
Zach: why not?
Matt B.: We just do not allow that on that package, only on the packages above that.
Zach: I’m just trying to get an honest answer as to why you wouldn’t include that on your more affordable packages when it’s been a standard in the industry for quite some time now. a majority of hosts quit forbidding these types of features that really don’t cost a dime for you all to provide. In all honesty, I’m looking for an honest host and by limiting the most basic features of hosting these days (especially since MySQL is needed for WordPress, which is one of the most common platforms to use for a website) it seems that you guys are misleading us into paying a higher price for a package that actually supports what hosting should come with anyways. So, could I please get an honest answer as to why this is forbidden on your smaller package?
Matt B.: It is a company policy, it is the way the packages are setup, I do not have control over that for you. Since the value Class packages are about 50% slower that our Business class hosting it is not recommended to install WordPress since you wouldn’t be able to install other plugins because the site would either not load properly or run very slow.
Zach: Wow, so you all just take away as much as you can because a customer doesn’t want to start off with your more expensive plans?
Matt B.: We do not do that, we offer several different packages for our clients, the starter package does not have a MySQL database so it would be for someone who does not need one. if you needed one then you would need to go with a higher package with us.
Zach: That’s exactly what you all are doing to be honest, I don’t know how you can’t see that’s essentially misleading customers if they want a real value for web hosting. I thank you for your time Matt, this is something that should have been brought to light a long time ago.
Matt B.: well thank you for your opinion, you have a great day.
Now this really p*ssed me off. Honestly, they are misleading people into buying a higher priced plan if they want good hosting that’s not going to be slow. I can’t believe this, but there it is right out of the horse’s mouth. Can you say FAIL?
Performance
Well, after hearing it from them that their starter plan is slower than the more expensive plans, I have to say that these guys simply don’t have the best performance that the industry has ever seen. Now, if you do purchase their business class hosting, they do have pretty good servers and a pretty good network to ensure that you do see great performance.
To keep it simple, if you want to pay a higher price, you’ll get good performance. if you just want a bargain, you’re going to get screwed.
Reliability
Based upon the experiences of those who hosted over at InMotion Hosting, reliability seems to be one thing that these folks know how to provide. Once in a while, you may see a spurt of downtime, but for the most part they keep their clients’ websites online. They claim to provide 99.9% uptime, which is a pretty good standard for them to uphold.
Then again, what’s to say if you purchase their starter plan they don’t skimp you on downtime like they skimped on the features?
Support
InMotion provides around-the-clock support via live chat, e-mail, telephone, and their helpdesk. I must give them props for providing one of the most expensive support methods in the industry. While they suck in many of the other areas, they seem to be one of the best in providing reliable support.
For the do-it-yourselfers, they offer quite a bit of information that can be accessed via their website.
Love Factor
Do I have any love for InMotion Hosting today? Absolutely NOT! I hate how they do business, because nobody should try and mislead consumers just to make an extra buck each month. They do have a couple of positives, but that doesn’t hide the fact that they are unethical about how they do business.
After all, you saw how hard it was to get a straight-forward answer from them, if you could even call their response that.
